India Takes A Giant Indigenisation Leap With 351 Products Off Defense Imports List

Just before the close of the year, the ‘Made In India’ initiative has taken another huge turn for the better as it decided to indigenize the production of almost 351 products in India that were earlier being imported, especially for the Indian defense sector.

The items to be indigenized includes a laser warning sensor, high-pressure check valve, high-pressure globe valve, drainage intrusion detection systems, and various types of cables, sockets, and voltage control oscillator.

This move will save India foreign exchange to the tune of Rs. 3000 crores annually. The list of 351 items comprises sub-systems and components for use in the defense industry. These items were usually being imported under a staggering timeline. It is worth noting that this is the third list that has been released by the ministry in the last 16 months and it comes as part of the government’s overall aim to make India a hub of manufacturing of military platforms and equipment.

Under the Narendra Modi leadership, India is gradually moving towards the ‘Atmanirbhar’ project that envisions India to become self-sufficient in many key industries. The new updated third list also states a list of 2,500 items that it said have already been “indigenized.”

In a formal statement by the ministry, it has been stated that, “A positive indigenization list of sub-systems/assemblies/sub-assemblies/components has been notified by the department of defense production, Ministry of Defense, as part of the efforts to achieve self-reliance in defense manufacturing and minimize imports by defense public sector undertakings.”

Further, the statement said that approximately, 351 imported items will be indigenized in the next three years, adding on that the items mentioned in the list will only be procured from Indian industries as per the timelines indicated. Import restrictions on the first 172 odd items come by the end of 2021. The same provisions will also be applicable on another 89 components by December 2023. Import restrictions on another set of 90 items will come into effect by December 2024.
