India reiterates call for Afghan peace, echoes UAE’s efforts for a global response

Afghanistan – India on Tuesday reiterated call for “unhindered humanitarian assistance” in Afghanistan as well as collective global response to resolve the ongoing crisis in the country. Addressing the extraordinary meeting of G20 leaders on Afghanistan, PM Narendra Modi raised call for “a unified international response” based on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2593 to improve the current situation in Afghanistan.

“Participated in the G20 Summit on Afghanistan. Stressed on preventing Afghan territory from becoming the source of radicalization and terrorism. Also called for urgent and unhindered humanitarian assistance to Afghan citizens and an inclusive administration,” PM Modi wrote in an official message on social media.

Echoing PM Modi’s statement, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also expressed commitment to protecting humanitarian workers and diplomats to foster a safe working environment for everyone in Afghanistan. Notably, experts have also highlighted the need for bringing long-lasting peace in Afghanistan to promote stability in the region and the world.

India has implemented more than 500 development projects in Afghanistan over the past few years. At the same time, the UAE has provided more than $1.7 billion in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan for various projects related to infrastructure, food support, housing and women empowerment.

Under the directives of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the UAE has facilitated the evacuation of over 40,000 Afghans and foreigners from Afghanistan since August along with ensuring the provision of necessary food and medical aid for Afghan refugees.

“Over the past few days, the UAE sent five aid planes carrying humanitarian assistance, including emergency food and medical aid to meet the urgent needs of Afghan families under the tough circumstances they are reeling under,” Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, said during a recent virtual conference.

Both the UAE and India have received recognition and praises from world governments and international institutions for their aid and evacuation efforts for at-risk Afghans.

“India has played a constructive role in Afghanistan in the past by providing assistance in training and infrastructure improvements,” the Pentagon had said in a statement.
