India has been grappling to contain the Covid-19 infection spread for almost seven months now. On Friday, the country recorded Covid-19 caseload reduced below the 6 lakh mark after 85 days. The active positive cases tally was 5.94 lakh on Friday, less than the 5.96 lakh mark on August 6.

The Union Health Ministry issued statement on Friday stating, “Presently the active cases comprise only 7.35% of the total positive cases of the country standing at 5,94,386. This has strengthened its trend of steady decline. India has also sustained its high number of recoveries. The total recovered cases stand at 73,73,375. India continues to be the topmost country with the maximum number of recovered cases globally. The difference between active cases and recovered cases is consistently increasing and stands at 6,778,989 on Friday.”

Furthermore, the current tally of Covid-19 active cases in India has dropped to 50% from its mid-September peak. The decline has been the sharpest yet when compared to the cases and deaths. The rolling average of 7 days of daily coronavirus cases was recorded as 47,216 on Thursday. This is nearly half of that on September 17, which was 93,735.

The decline in daily deaths has been even sharper. By October 29, the daily death tally has reduced by over 50% to 543, when compared to that on September 19 which was 1,176.

The national average of tests per day per million population stands at 844. The figure for Delhi and Kerala has exceeded 3,000.

Currently the daily cases and deaths are at similar level seen in July. On July 27, the seven day rolling average of cases was 46,760. It took exact 52 days from then for Covid-19 cases to double up reaching the peak on September 17.

The Union Health Ministry further reported on Friday that in last 24 hours 57,386 people had recovered and were discharged. The new cases tally recorded in 24 hours stood at 48,648. With this the recovery rate across India has reached 91.15%.

Of the recovered cases Kerala has the maximum number of recoveries with over 8000 in a single day. Maharashtra and Karnataka follow next with 7000 single day recoveries. However, Kerala is still recording the maximum number of confirmed cases with over 7000. Delhi and Maharashtra follow next with each recording 5000 cases.

Health Ministry also noted that many States and Union Territories had exceeded the recommended number of Covid-19 tests. It said, “The national average of tests per day per million population stands at 844. The figure for Delhi and Kerala has exceeded 3,000.”

Preparing for equitable vaccination for when the Covid-19 vaccine would be available, the Union government has asked states to form committees that would coordinate the vaccination drive with minimum regular medical services disruptions.
