India records surge in power consumption: 12.6% growth in June first week

Just in first week of June, India has recorded growth in power consumption of 12.6 per cent, at 25.36 billion units (BU). This is indicative of gradual recovery in industrial and commercial electricity demand. Power ministry data showed the power consumption in June first week last year at 22.53 BU.

For last year in June month, power consumption took a fall by approximately 11 percent to 105.80 BU from 117.98 BU in June 2019. This was primarily attributed to pandemic led lockdown restrictions and lesser economic activities. 

In May this year the power consumption stood at 26.24 BU even though there were lockdown restrictions across states amid catastrophic Covid-19 second wave. This however shows that in a month time there has been a dip in power consumption by 3.35 per cent. 

Peak power demand in a day saw a growth of more than 15 per cent in June first week at 168.72 GW as compared to 146.53 GW last year on June 6. Peak demand in entire June 2020 however slipped to 164.98 GW to 182.45 GW same time 2019. The figures are thus indicative of slower demand and recovery in industrial power consumption in June first week despite growth in double digit.

Experts share the hope that June onwards there would be surge in demand of industrial power indicative of positive recovery as states would continue to ease down restrictions.

This year as the lockdown was imposed due to the second wave in May, the impact was witnessed. In May, the power consumption witnessed a year-on-year growth of 8.2 percent, standing at 110.47 BU even though there was low base at the same time last year. Power consumption in February this year was 103.25 BU as compared to last year’s 103.81 BU. This year in March, power consumption witnessed a growth by near 22 percent to 120.63 BU compared to 98.95 BU same month in 2020.
