India Prides In Its Homegrown Aircraft Carrier To Be Commissioned In 2022

According to Indian Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh, India’s first homegrown Aircraft carrier (IAC) will be commissioned by 2022. This has been communicated as a step towards the self-reliance effort by the Indian government.  

Singh has described it as India’s pride and a shining example of Atmanirbhar Bharat. “Commissioning of this IAC next year would be a befitting tribute to India’s 75th year of India’s independence”, he said.

Singh visited the IAC being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited recently. The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier is going to be used by the Indian Navy. It is also known as the INS Vikrant. 

The IAC would be commissioned in the first half of 2022. It is being considered as the most potent sea-based asset as of now. It has been confirmed that the aircraft carrier would be used to ship the MIG-29K fighter aircraft, Kamov-31 Air Early Warning Helicopters, the soon to be inducted MH-60R multi-role helicopter and the indigenously manufactured Advanced Light Helicopters.

As pride of India, it would offer an incomparable prowess to the armed forces as a military instrument. This is due to its ability to project Air Power over long distances, including Air Interdiction, Anti-Surface Warfare, offensive and defensive Counter Air, Airborne anti-submarine warfare and airborne early warning.

Adding to the pride of the aircraft being approved by the NDA government earlier, Mr. Singh said, “The combat capability, reach and versatility of the aircraft carrier will add formidable capabilities in the defense of our country and help secure India’s interests in maritime domain.”

Under Modi’s leadership, it has been communicated that the Centre’s impetus is “modernisation, harnessing India’s indigenous industry and know-how, as a key priority. Forty-two of the 44 warships on order being built at Indian shipyards is a testimony of this.”
