India opens an account on day 1 of Tokyo Olympics: Mirabai Chanu wins silver in weightlifting

Mirabai Chanu successfully managed to open India’s medal tally in Tokyo Olympics by winning a silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting category. On day 1 of the Olympic Games, the 26-year-old lifted a total of 202 kg (87 kg +115 kg). With this Chanu became the second Indian weightlifter to win a medal in Olympics after Karnam Malleswari who won a medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. 

“It’s really a dream come true for me. I would like to dedicate this medal to my country and would like to thank a billion prayers of all Indians who were with me during this journey,” Mirabai Chanu said in a statement on her Twitter account.

The gold medal was won by Hou Zhihui of China who lifted 210 kg. Bronze was bagged by Indonesia’s Aisah Windy Cantika who lifted 194 kg. 

There were other matches too scheduled for India on the first day of the Games. Saurabh Chaudhary managed to reach finals of 10 m air pistol but finished on the seventh position.

In archery, Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav’s duo marched to quarters in the mixed teams but lost to South Korea. 

Indian men’s hockey team registered a win by beating New Zealand by 3-2 in a first group match. B. Sai Praneeth lost men’s singles opener match in badminton. Sumit Nagpal became won a tennis singles match, becoming the first to do so since Leander Paes in 1996 Atlanta Games.

In table tennis mixed doubles, Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra lost to Chinese Taipei Lin Yun-Ju and Cheng I-Ching.  But table tennis women singles’ first-round win was registered by Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee. 

The rowing team of Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal Jat qualified for the repechage round after finishing fifth in the men’s lightweight double sculls heat. Indian judoka Sushila Devi came to an early loss to Hungarian Eva Csernoviczki.
