As India is determined to move ahead with its vaccination drive across the length and breathe of the country, it is eyeing the younger lot soon too. Come March and the 12-14 years old will also be encouraged to get themselves vaccinated.

This has been communicated by a top government official.

According to Dr. N.K. Arora, chairman of the Covid-19 working group of NTAGI, a policy decision may be taken in this regard once the inoculation of those in the 15–18-year category is completed.

It is heartwarming to know that at least 3.5crore children in the age group of 15-18 years have received their first vaccine shot. In a recent twitter, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya, shared how indeed, young Indians are enthusiastic to get themselves inoculated.

According to Dr. Arora, the population in the 12 to 14 age group is estimated to be around 7.5 crore. There is no requirement for new registration for the beneficiaries of precautionary Covid-19 vaccine dose, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed.

In Haryana, for example, health minister Anil Vij said that seven lakh children aged between 15-18 have been vaccinated against COVID-19, adding that children in this age group will not be allowed to attend physical classes without getting vaccination once the schools open. Previously, the Covid-19 vaccination to children had been stalled by the high court, on the pretext that clinical trials were important. The Centre, in the affidavit filed through standing counsel Anurag Ahluwalia, had said vaccination was the topmost priority of the government and all efforts were being made to achieve an objective of 100 per cent vaccination in the shortest time possible keeping the available resources in mind and availability of vaccine doses into consideration.
