Hacktivists are groups of online attackers who are driven by political or religious motivations. India has become a major target for religious hacktivists who want to hurt religious beliefs of Indians.
They use cyber attacks, like overloading websites, to attack India. Security companies are now using computer algorithms (machine learning & AI) that learn and think like humans to analyze the huge amount of information coming from the internet to stop these attacks.
Recently, it was revealed that these hacktivists launched almost 480 attacks on Indian websites in the first 3 months of this year alone.
Another report confirmed that this trend has been going on for the past two years. While hacktivists target various countries, like Israel and Poland, for political or religious reasons, India is mainly targeted due to religious beliefs.
Hacktivists from countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia are behind many of these attacks on India.
They focus on India’s communication channels to coordinate their activities. Other countries like Poland and Ukraine are attacked for political reasons by groups from the Middle East and Russia.
Originally, hacktivism started with cyber attacks supporting social causes. But now, these attacks are used for religious and political reasons, and sometimes even as cover for state-sponsored cyber attacks.
Hacktivists can either target government organizations, individuals and websites. Hacktivists fear that their religious beliefs can be exposed or their religion can be overshadowed by other ancient religions.
It’s important to note that security companies are also using the same advanced tools as hacktivists to protect against these attacks.
They suggest using smarter security solutions that can adapt to new types of attacks and also recommend regular security checks, employee training, and other measures to prevent these cyber threats.
However, these tasks are quite challenging and require the efforts of experts in information security.
A group called Mysterious Team Bangladesh has also been causing trouble online. They have carried out over 750 cyber attacks and defaced 78 websites since June 2022.
Their main targets are government, financial, and transportation organizations, with a focus on India.
The group emerged in 2020 but gained attention in 2022 after attacking high-level targets in India, Israel, and other countries.
They have religious and political motives. They gain access to servers and panels through security flaws or weak passwords.

They use known vulnerabilities in PHPMyAdmin and WordPress for their attacks. Experts believe they will continue to target financial and government entities. Thus India has to be highly alert not just on borders but also in the online world.
