India Might See More Regulated Content On OTT Platforms Since Winter

India Might See More Regulated Content On OTT Platforms: All the OTT (Over-the-Top) platforms are now going to come under the purview of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of India. This has come through in response petition filed by an autonomous body a few months ago. The Supreme Court sought a response from the Centre in September over this matter.

Regulation and control will also apply to all the news and information circulated online and on social media. With this, most of the content circulating on the internet will now come under the ambit of government regulation.

However, this does not mean that there is going to be censorship as the terms of the government are still unclear.

The media fraternity has mixed responses to the move. However, most are happy that this will probably address the cycle of fake news all together. Further, this move could be seen as an easy way to ‘curb and control digital media. It is noteworthy that most of the journalism is happening on the digital platform.  However, Freedom of Speech should not be hampered.’

Further, there are indications that ultimately, OTT platforms might have to go through certifications. It has been noticed that the content on these platforms has had adverse effect on the youth of the country. One particular incident became known when a youth tried to emulate the example of a character in a recently released sequel of Mirzapur that released on Amazon Prime in October 2020.

The ministry control could be perhaps a good step to curb fake news online too. The notification has been made public after being officially signed of by President Of India, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind.
