ODI series: In the world of cricket, Australia is never considered an easy team no matter who is in front and who is part of the team. It is because of their balance in every department which their opponents seem to be missing in the ongoing India tour Australia.
In the one day series consisting of three matches, Australia took away the title but won two consecutive matches. The second 50-over match against the two was played yesterday when the Australian team scored the highest total against their arch rivals.
India lost the second ODI by 51 runs while earlier on November 27, the hosts beat the Virat Kohli led team by 66 runs. In both the ODI’s Australia managed to put up a high total in both the gamers which experts credit to ineffective bowling of the bowlers.
Apart from Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, every bowler from the Indian team was struggling to get a wicket while also saving their economy. Indian team was finding it difficult to bowl to the in-form Australian batters–Steve Smith, David Warner–among others. Ravindra Jadega was the only player other than Shami to have shown some consistency but he too went ahead of the average run rate.
This highlighted the problem of lack of seamers in the team. Hardik Pandya had recently suffered a lower back injury due which he is unable to contribute where he is needed. He is part of the team not as an all-rounder but a specialist batsman and without him, the Indian bowling unit has gone for a toss.
Be it Navdeep Saini or Yuzvendra Chahal or Bumrah for that matter, every bowler is failing to control the flood of runs coming from the Aussies. Pandya was well aware of the issue and also addressed it in an after match press conference. He said that the team needs someone who has already played for India or if necessary, we might even have to make one.
He also hinted towards the ‘other Pandya’ in the family. “That has been the question always, right? We have to find and maybe make… I have always believed that… even when I came into the circuit, I was not always the all-rounder which I wanted to be. But with time I groomed myself and became that bowling option. I worked on my bowling,” he said.
India is missing out a seam attack and it is apparently the only big cricket playing nations to miss a good seam attack. But also what needs to be kept in mind is that it is not only seam that is missing from the team. The Indian team has long lost its balance in the middle order, filled with two or three players who can be categorised as multi-dimensional.
Four to five years ago, when Mahendra SIngh Dhoni captained the 11-squad, he used a combination of Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Kedar Jadhav, who all are great hitters and also are helpful in restricting the batsman through their spin-attack. Kohli also made the bowling figures in Dhoni’s team. But now, Kohli with a bowl seems missing. It was in 2017 against Sri Lanka when Kohli was last seen bowling.
