On Friday India crossed the mark of 1 lakh deaths due to coronavirus infection, a day after the global index reached 1 million mark. Breaking the equation down, it means that India now accounts for 10% deaths of Covid-19 related deaths of world. India is on number three with maximum deaths globally after United States of America and Brazil. US accounts for over 2.12 lakh deaths while Brazil is number two with 1.45 lakh deaths.
Approximately 4000-6000 people have been dying globally due to coronavirus infection, and in India approximately 1000 deaths are being recorded for over a month now. This means almost 15-25% of global deaths on a daily basis. India has been recording a case fatality ratio (CFR), that is the number of deaths out of total confirmed infections has been reducing for more than three months now. CFR reduced from 1.76% to 1.56% during September.
Maharashtra has accounted for over 1/3rd of deaths in India, having registered tally of almost 38,000 Covid-19 fatalities till now. The state has registered very high CFR of 2.67%. On the other hand both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have each recorded more than 9,000 deaths, but their CFRs are as per the national average of 1.5%. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh each have recorded over 5,000 deaths. Punjab has recorded the highest CFR in the country of 3%. The state has relatively lower case load of 1.15 lakh but high number of deaths of nearly 3500.
India’s deaths per million population are still lower globally, almost half the world average. India, so far, has recorded 72 deaths per million while the global average is of 131 deaths per million.
