On Sunday, India has crossed the 1 lakh daily mark of Covid-19 cases, making it the worst ever surge. Maharashtra alone contributed with over 57,000 positive cases. The state of Maharashtra too has experienced this first time ever, leading to the imposition of weekend lockdown and night curfew during weekdays.
Last year September 19 had recorded the highest positive Covid-19 cases of 97,894. Post that the numbers declined for five months before the peak on Sunday, indicating a second Covid-19 wave.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a crucial importance review meeting. During the meeting, Prime Minister directed senior officials to dispatch teams of public health experts to states of maximum surge Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Punjab.
While Maharashtra recorded 57,074 positive cases on Sunday, no other state has ever recorded more than 12,000 cases in a day. In the state, Pune and Mumbai recorded highest number of cases 12, 472 and 11,206 respectively. While Punjab slipped to 3000 new cases per day, Chhattisgarh recorded over 5000 new cases per day for second consecutive day. Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Karnataka are together in the 4000 cases per day club.
Post Sunday’s tally, India now has 1.25 crore people infected with Covid-19, with 7 lakh cases currently active. Out of this a whooping number of 4.3 lakh is in Maharashtra alone. Maharashtra has contributed 57% of total coronavirus cases in India and 47% death in past 14 days. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Punjab together account for over 76% of the country’s caseload.
During the review meeting, Prime Minister Modi stressed the importance of strict implementation of the five-fold strategy: testing, tracing, treatment, Covid-appropriate behavior, and vaccination. “The Prime Minister directed to continue with the mission-mode approach in the states and districts reporting high cases so that the collective gains of Covid-19 management in the country in the last 15 months are not squandered,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.
Prime Minister has also directed officials to ramp up the availability of ventilator beds and oxygen availability in order to reduce mortality.
