India Expands Its Friendship In African Continent

India is seriously looking at investing and expanding its relations with the African continent. The new deal has now been signed with Seychelles where India is going to play a key role in its various developmental projects.

The aim for India is two-pronged; diplomacy and human-centric development help to be extended to Seychelles. This move has been made under the Sagar initiative which works towards extending help to needing nations.  PM Narendra Modi made an announcement at the India-Seychelles high-level virtual event held recently that was attended by Wavel Ramkalawan, President, Republic of Seychelles, and Indian PM Narendra Modi.

The first projects to be seen taking shape will include a new Magistrate’s Court Building, a solar power plant, and a fast patrol vessel. In total, ten projects are going to be readied with help from India. These will all aim to concentrate on being high-impact community development projects.

Sagar is a Security and Growth for All in the Region. Countries in focus under this program include Mauritius, Maldives, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles.  While the Sagar project is primarily about undertaking ocean security for countries around the Indian ocean, its mention has not been made as much as it should have been, according to political analysts. However the purview was expanded and extended into economic and security cooperation too.

India intends to deepen economic and security cooperation with its maritime neighbors and assist in building their maritime security capabilities. For this, India would cooperate on the exchange of information, coastal surveillance, building of infrastructure and strengthening their capabilities.

A patrol vessel has been presented by India to Seychelles for the mini nation to enhance its maritime security.  The vehicle worth Rs. 100 crores is a huge gift to give.

The 48.9 m fast patrol vessel, built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineering, will be used for multi-purpose operations, such as patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching, and search and rescue (SAR). India’s High Commissioner Dalbir Singh Suhag handed over a ceremonial model of the fast patrol vessel to a Seychelles minister at the virtual summit.
