India affirms solidarity with Afghan people

Afghanistan -Officials from India and the Taliban recently held their first meeting on the sidelines of the Moscow format dialogue since the takeover of Afghanistan by the latter in August 2021. After their second official meeting, Taliban said in a statement that the Indian side had expressed its readiness to providing extensive humanitarian assistance to Afghani people in crisis. This statement has come days after media reports stated that India was working on sending 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat and medical aid to Afghan people with the help of United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

Taking to Twitter, Zabihullah Mujahid, official spokesperson of ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’, had posted: “The Indian envoy to the Moscow format meeting said that the people of Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance, Afghanistan is going through a difficult situation. India is ready to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.”

India’s extends support to Afghan people

Speaking about the development, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi maintained that India’s policy towards Afghanistan is guided by its friendship with the Afghan people. He further extended India’s willingness to stand by Afghan people and the need for expanding international cooperation to create an enabling environment for unimpeded, unrestricted and direct access to humanitarian assistance providers and non-discriminatory distribution for the betterment of the landlocked country.

Earlier, G20 president Italy hailed India’s key role as an important regional actor to promote a stable and secure environment in Afghanistan.
