After speaking to the late actor’s father, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recommended that the case be handed over to the CBI.
The case of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in June is taking a political turn in Bihar with both opposition parties and allies demanding a CBI probe and accusing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of not taking more proactive measures to ensure proper handling of the investigations. Realising the matter may cast a shadow on upcoming assembly elections in the state, the CM has recommended that case be transferred to the CBI. Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had ruled out the need for a CBI probe.
The up and coming actor was found dead in his apartment in Mumbai on June 14. The Mumbai police had ruled his death as a suicide and have said that he had been suffering from bipolar disorder and was under medication. However, his family has alleged foul play and implicated his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, filing a complaint that she had transferred money out of his account and had also been mentally harassing her. This brought Bihar police into the picture.
The Bihar and Mumbai investigating teams have been at odds with each other, stepping on each other’s toes. Bihar police say they are not being given the freedom to conduct investigations and the Mumbai police are in a rush to wrap up the case. Recently a police officer from Bihar who had arrived in Mumbai regarding the case was forcibly quarantine. The actor’s father has also said that he had reached out to the Mumbai police months ago, fearing for his son’s life, but no action had been taken.

Meanwhile, the Supreme court heard a petition filed by the family of Rhea Chakraborty that challenged Bihar’s jurisdiction in the case and claimed that they had no legal basis to get involved. The Bihar government’s demands in regard to CBI enquiry, they said, also can’t be met. They had requested that the FIR filed in Patna against her be transferred to Mumbai. The Mumbai police have cleared her of any financial wrongdoing.
