Social distancing is the only way that the pandemic facing the world can be contained and cases of infectious contraction reduced. In order to ensure people are able to adhere to this basic guideline, security cameras are being used that can generate supporting algorithms.

This is the latest use of surveillance technology where a computer vision algorithm can actually calculate how well people are keeping their distance from each other. Being employed in many cities of the US and UK, India is also making use of similar technology.

India has been making use of flying drones to enforce the mass lockdown, check fever on patients, etc. Of approximately 20,000 such drones employed, many are also being used to assist state and law enforcement staff across the country. They are primarily of use in areas where social distancing is a challenge and density of population is high.

Drone technology is being utilized for checking on social distancing protocols and even spreading awareness about COVID-19. Cases were reported from states of Gujarat, Uttrakhand and even Delhi where police used drones to bust social get- together parties, unnecessary movement of vehicles on roads, and similar incidents where social distancing guideline seemed to have been flaunted.

In the United Kingdom, an online system has been able to keep a tab on cases of snitching. Strangely, but this is a time on artificial intelligence applications are ruling the roost and are being roped in for surveillance technological tools like maps, tracking tools that are able to source data about who is sick, who is moving around and where there are more than five people assembling to meet.

A Lucknow based scientist has invented a drone that can be used to sanitise colonies and cars. Weighing around 10 kgs, the drone uses six rotary engines. Similar technology is already in use in other states of India like Telangana, Chattisgarh and Tamil Nadu.

In America, sadly technology is being used to reinforce the need for social distancing. Confirmed reports havecome in from various states where law enforcement has to literally yell at people standing too close to each other, and neighbors across the U.S. actually call the cops on each other for not keeping six feet apart.
