Home Minister Gives Strict Warning To End Manipur Violence

Home Minister Amit Shah has given a stern warning to rioters in Manipur to surrender. A peace committee will also be set up under the guidance of the Governor.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has issued a stern warning to put an end to the ongoing violence in Manipur. 

Following his three-day visit to the violence-hit northeastern state, Shah announced the formation of a probe panel headed by a retired judge of the rank of the chief justice of a high court.

The panel will investigate the reasons for the violence and identify those responsible for it. Additionally, a special team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will probe six cases related to the violence.

During his visit, Shah held multiple meetings with various sections of society, including officers, political parties, and representatives of civil groups. 

He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and assured the people of Manipur that it would be impartial and fair. 

To oversee coordination among the agencies deployed in the state, an inter-agency unified command under the leadership of Kuldeep Singh, a retired DG of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), will start working from that day.

Amit Shah also urged all individuals in possession of arms to surrender them to the police, warning that a combing operation would commence the following day. 

He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and appealed to civil society organizations to disregard rumors and contribute to the restoration of calm.

The situation in Manipur has been volatile in recent weeks, with incidents of violence escalating. 

The trigger for the unrest was a protest rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) against the demand for including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. 

Subsequently, violence erupted, resulting in multiple casualties, damage to property, and the reported looting of arms and ammunition.

In response to the situation, Amit Shah announced an ex gratia amount of ₹10 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the violence, with ₹5 lakh provided by the state and ₹5 lakh by the central government.

The establishment of a probe panel, the deployment of a special CBI team, and the formation of an inter-agency unified command may restore peace in the state soon. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah aims to prevent further violence and restore stability in the region.
