The global popularity of Hindi is soaring. Hindi movies, blogs, poets, comedy shows, videos and podcasts are gaining immense traction worldwide.
Despite being on an English portal, today, we’re going to dive into the significance of Hindi Diwas, celebrated every year on September 14th.
It’s a day dedicated to promoting the Hindi language and its use across India. But did you know that Hindi isn’t actually the national language of India?
First things first, India doesn’t have a national language. What it does have is incredible linguistic diversity. There are a staggering 22 official languages listed in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India.
Among them, Hindi and English are the most widely used, but Hindi is not a native language in some states, and English is not a native language for most of the Indians.
India is home to over 1 billion people who speak more than 1000 languages. To acknowledge and respect this diversity, India’s Constitution doesn’t designate a single national language.
Instead, it recognizes multiple official languages, allowing different linguistic communities to coexist harmoniously.
So, how did Hindi become such an important language in India? The story dates back to September 14, 1949, when the Constituent Assembly decided to make Hindi an official language.
It was the efforts of Hindi scholars Beohar Rajendra Simha along with Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Kaka Kalelkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt and Seth Govind Das.
Interestingly, this date also marks the birth anniversary of Beohar Rajendra Simha, a scholar and Hindi poet who played a significant role in making Hindi official.
However, when India’s Constitution came into effect in 1950, it allowed the use of English alongside Hindi for government affairs. This was to accommodate the concerns raised by non-Hindi-speaking states.
So, both Hindi and English were given official status, and the first Hindi Diwas was celebrated on September 14, 1953.
Now, why is Hindi Diwas celebrated? It’s a day to highlight the significance of Hindi as a means of communication across India’s diverse population.
While English has become prominent, Hindi still plays a crucial role in official communications at both the state and central government levels. And it is also the most spoken language across the country.
On this day, schools, colleges, and various institutions often organize competitions to promote the language among students and the public.
Social organizations and government departments also hold events to celebrate Hindi. It’s a day that reflects the pride and heritage of the Hindi language.
