Himanta Sarma’s Twitter Bio Change, A Bharat vs INDIA Message

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, changed “India” to “Bharat” in his Twitter bio after 26 opposition parties selected the name INDIA for their unified front as they prepare to challenge the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.

Mr. Sarma made a pointed jab at the name of the opposition alliance, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), asserting that the British gave the country the name India and that the fight should be to free the country from “colonial legacies”.

Following the opposition’s announcement, Mr. Sarma immediately changed his Twitter bio from “Chief Minister of Assam, India” to “Chief Minister of Assam, Bharat”.

Following the opposition’s announcement, Mr. Sarma immediately changed his Twitter bio from “Chief Minister of Assam, India” to “Chief Minister of Assam, Bharat”.

In response to Mr. Sarma’s remarks, the Congress advised the Chief Minister of Assam to address them to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has named several government initiatives and programs after India, including “Digital India,” “Make In India,” and “Skill India,” among others. Is the Assam chief minister harboring too many grudges? His new mentor, Mr. Modi, gave us the names of three ongoing programs: Skill India, Start-up India, and Digital India. PM Modi has urged the chief executives of the various states to cooperate as “Team India.” He even urged people to “Vote India!,”  Jairam Ramesh the congress leader wrote on Twitter.

“However, Mr. Sarma gets upset and claims the use of the word India reflects ‘colonial mentality’ when 26 political parties call their alliance INDIA (Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance)! He ought to go tell his boss about that, he continued.

To avoid the “India vs. Bharat” debate, opposition parties added the slogan “Jeetega Bharat” (India will win) to their joint front today.
