Hijab row: Karnataka High Court adjourns hearing till next date

Karnataka – After a long hearing, the Karnataka High Court concluded today by adjourning the case for the next date. The bench listened to senior advocate Devadatt Kamat’s arguments on the ongoing hijab row.

The discussion included focusing on Article 25(1). The advocate argued with the concept saying that if the core religious practices harm or offen public order, they can very well be regulated.

Last week on Friday, the court asserted that students of any institution should not wear any religious dress to an educational institution that has prescribed uniforms. It was an interim order and a permanent solution was yet to be heard by the court for which the discussion continued today as well.

There was a need to calm down the sentiments of people over the rising communal tensions over the hijab ban row hence a five day break was announced in Karnataka which opened on Monday.  The colleges in the state have been ordered to be closed till February 16.

The Rotary Educational Society School in Mandya, for instance, saw students, teachers and staff were seen removing their hijabs to enter the school. This was despite pleas of the parents who wanted them to remove their hijabs only after they entered the classrooms. To keep the stability in the state, as precautionary measures, orders have been imposed close to the campuses in Udupi and Mangalore till Saturday this week. The security official will be clamping down 200-meter radius around the high school by reinstating section 144 CrPC.
