High Court Summons BBC In Defamation Suit Over Modi Documentary

The Delhi High Court has issued summons to BBC for its false accusations to defame PM Modi & India. ‘Justice on Trial’ NGO filed a defamation suit against BBC.

The Delhi High Court has issued a summons to the BBC in response to a defamation suit filed by an NGO named ‘Justice on Trial’.

The suit claims that the BBC’s two-part documentary titled ‘India: The Modi Question’ made false claims and cast a slur on the reputation of India, its judiciary, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The non-profit organization, based in Gujarat, alleges that the documentary contains defamatory imputations and caste slurs.

Senior Advocate Harish Salve represented the NGO in court. The High Court has directed the BBC to respond to the summons and notice through all permissible modes. The defamation case will be taken up for further proceedings in September.

The BBC documentary titled ‘India: The Modi Question’ focuses on the 2002 Gujarat riots that occurred when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of the state.

The documentary has been controversial as it raises questions and criticism regarding Modi’s role and the handling of the riots.

It has sparked a major controversy in India, with debates and divisions among political parties and student unions on whether it should be screened or not.

The documentary has been banned in India, but despite this, some universities, including JNU and Hyderabad University, have screened it, defying government orders.

The documentary in question, ‘India: The Modi Question’, has faced criticism for its alleged biased portrayal of India and its Prime Minister.

The NGO ‘Justice on Trial’ contends that the documentary’s content is defamatory and aims to tarnish the country’s reputation and undermine the judiciary.
