High Court Gives Major Relief To Rapido, Ola, Uber Bike Taxis

The Delhi High Court ruled against the Delhi state govt and gave major relief to the bike taxi companies – Rapido, Ola & Uber, by allowing them to operate freely.

The Delhi High Court has provided a major relief to app-based bike taxi platforms such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido by staying an order issued by the city’s transport department.

The department had previously ordered an immediate halt to the bike taxi services offered by these platforms and warned of penal action for any violations.

However, the court has now directed the transport department not to take any coercive measures against the bike taxi platforms until a comprehensive policy is formulated.

The bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna issued the stay order, ensuring that platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido can continue their ride-sharing services without facing immediate penalties.

The transport department’s February order had required app-based bike taxi providers to obtain commercial permits to operate their services on the road. Violations of this order would have resulted in fines of up to Rs 1 lakh under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Uber has expressed gratitude for the court’s decision, as it provides protection to the company and its bike taxi service in Delhi.

The order is seen as a relief for Uber drivers who were affected by the ban and for the riders who rely on the affordability and convenience of bike taxis for their last-mile connectivity needs.

Uber emphasized its commitment to serving the city and being the preferred platform for both riders and drivers.

This development is significant for app-based bike taxi platforms as it allows them to continue operating while awaiting the formulation of a comprehensive policy.

The court’s decision recognizes the importance of ride-sharing services provided by Ola, Uber, Rapido, and similar platforms, which have gained popularity among commuters for their convenience and cost-effectiveness.

The stay order prevents any immediate adverse actions against these services, giving them a legal respite and an opportunity to work with authorities in establishing regulations that ensure the safety and quality of their operations.
