Hansal Mehta’s ‘Faraaz’ Based On Real Terror Attack In Dhaka

Faraaz is based on the tragic Holey Artisan incident which happened in Dhaka on 1st July, 2016. The film had a grand world premiere at BFI London Film Festival 2022.

T-Series launched the official trailer of Hansal Mehta’s suspense thriller “Faraaz” on their YouTube channel. The horrific Holey Artisan event, which occurred in Dhaka on July 1, 2016, is considered to be the origin for the movie.

The two-minute trailer opens with a shot of diners at a café in Dhaka—possibly Holey Artisan—enjoying their meals. While they are still seated, a group of terrorists storm the area and start randomly shooting those inside. 

The scene is set inside the first 20 seconds. The shock of witnessing the first bullet being fired is scary. 

The majority of those shot at first are foreigners, but when the scene shifts to various parts of the cafe, it becomes clear that the terrorists are randomly shooting everyone.\

The Bangladeshi police attempt to put together a strategy to rescue the hostages seized by the assailants as news stories start to surface and the rest of Dhaka slowly starts to realize what is occurring. 

As they are doing this, the scene turns back to one of the assailants, who asks, “Faraaz Hussain, Bangladesh ka Shehzada (Bangladesh’s prince)?” as he smiles at one of the hostages.

The name of the movie is primarily alluding to Faraaz Ayaaz Hossain, who displayed extraordinary bravery and stood up for his companions throughout those events before being slain in the midst of the violence.

Another customer can be seen attempting to protect the youngsters from the terrorists as the cops scramble to devise a method to save people inside the cafe. 

The customer, played by Zahaan Kapoor, is shown being pushed by a terrorist at the end of the trailer after the terrorist had asked him “what does he want?”

“I want my Islam back from people like you,” Zahaan responds.

Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s film “Saturday Afternoon,” was based on the same incident. But the Bangladeshi censor board didn’t approve that as the board was concerned that it may damage Bangladesh’s “image.”

However “Faraaz” is scheduled to open in theaters all across India on February 3. The BFI London Film Festival had also hosted the grand international premiere of “Faraaz” in 2022.
