The defense agreement between GE Aerospace, a US-based aerospace company, and India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been completed.
This agreement, which aims to produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force, was signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the US.
GE Aerospace is renowned worldwide for its expertise in providing jet engines, components, and systems for both commercial and military aircraft.
What makes this agreement remarkable is that the US rarely shares advanced technology of this nature, even with its closest allies.
This willingness to collaborate with India on such sensitive technology indicates a strong level of trust and cooperation between the two nations.
The approval from the US Congress clears the path for the implementation of the agreement with HAL. This collaboration involves not only the transfer of cutting-edge technology but also the local manufacturing of jet engines in India, along with licensing arrangements.
The core focus of this agreement is to expedite the production of F414 fighter jet engines, known for their reliability and performance.
These engines are intended to enhance the operational capabilities of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) MkII, a crucial component of India’s defense fleet.
Additionally, the agreement entails the joint production of 99 jet engines, a cost-effective measure facilitated by the technology transfer.
It’s worth noting that this decision comes as a significant milestone in defense relations between India and the United States.
During US President Joe Biden’s upcoming visit to India for the G20 leaders summit, both countries are expected to delve into further details to advance the agreement.
GE Aerospace has a substantial presence in India, operating across various sectors of the aerospace industry for over four decades. Their involvement spans areas such as engine development, avionics, engineering, manufacturing, and local sourcing.
This collaboration is expected to bring increased activity not only to India but also to several US sites supporting the development of the F414 engine.

This agreement is in line with the strategic partnership between the two nations, reflecting their commitment to bolstering defense ties and technological cooperation.
GE Aerospace’s journey in India began in 1986 when they collaborated with the Aeronautical Development Agency and HAL to support the development of India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) with F404 engines.
Both the F404 and F414 engines have played vital roles in the development and production of the LCA Mk1 and Mk2 programs.
The India-US defense collaboration not only strengthens India’s defense capabilities & provides the US an opportunity to expand but also deepens the technological ties between the two nations.
The interchange of advanced defense technology and the local production of jet engines also signify a significant step towards self-reliance (Aatm-Nirbhar Bharat) in defense manufacturing for India.
