Guru Arjan Dev Ji Martyrdom Day 2023: When Mughals Got Scared Of Sikhism

Guru Arjan Dev Ji laid the foundation stone of the Golden Temple in 1588. Jahangir & nobles of Mughal court felt threatened by the rising of Sikhism.

The martyrdom of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru of Sikh traditions, on May 30, 1606, was a significant event that marked a turning point not only in Sikh history but also in the history of India.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji was a visionary leader who possessed diverse talents and skills. He was a scholar, poet, philosopher, music composer, skilled administrator, and a respected statesman.

Born on April 15, 1563, in Goindwal Sahib, Guru Arjan Dev Ji became the Guru at the young age of 18. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to both the spiritual and temporal aspects of the Sikh community.

Notable among these contributions was the construction of the revered Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar.

He also compiled the Bani (religious literature) of the Sikh Gurus and other prominent saints into the Adi Granth, which serves as the holy scripture of Sikhism.

These endeavors aimed at nurturing the growth and development of the Sikh community, but they also drew the attention of various adversaries.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji faced opposition from his own brother, Prithi Chand, as well as from Chandu Shah, a senior noble in the Mughal court, who held personal grudges against the Guru.

Additionally, some influential Muslim clergy, led by Sheikh Ahmed Faruqi Sirhindi, felt threatened by the rising acceptance of Sikhism among the masses.

These forces conspired against Guru Arjan Dev Ji, exploiting an opportunity when Emperor Jahangir ascended the throne.

They falsely accused the Guru of aligning with Jahangir’s rival and portrayed the Sikh religion as a threat to Islam.

Emperor Jahangir, swayed by these manipulations and his own insecurities, ordered the arrest of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

Despite the Guru’s explanations and attempts to clarify the situation, Jahangir remained unconvinced and rendered a death sentence to the Guru on charges of rebellion.

The Guru faced unimaginable torture, enduring days of brutality inflicted upon him by Chandu Shah and his accomplices.

Throughout this ordeal, Guru Arjan Dev Ji maintained his composure and invoked the name of the Lord, displaying remarkable resilience and unwavering devotion.

The martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji became a defining moment for the Sikh community. His son, Guru Hargobind, succeeded him and embraced a path of both spirituality and temporal power, establishing the concept of Miri and Piri.

This transformation marked the beginning of a new era for Sikhs, emphasizing the principles of justice, defense against oppression, and the commitment to stand against injustice.
