Govt To Mint ₹75 Coin To Launch New Parliament Building

The Indian govt will launch a fresh ₹75 coin as a tribute to India’s 75 years of Independence (Amrit Kaal), ahead of the inauguration of the new Parliament building.

The Ministry of Finance in India has announced the launch of a special Rs 75 coin to celebrate the inauguration of the new Parliament Building and celebrate ‘Amrit Kaal’ 75 years of Indian independence. 

This coin is intended as a tribute to the milestone and will feature significant symbols and inscriptions of the nation.

The design of the coin will showcase the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar, a prominent national emblem of India, with the words “Satyamev Jayate” inscribed below it. 

On the left side of the coin, the word “Bharat” will be written in the Devanagari script, while on the right side, “India” will be written in English.

The reverse side of the coin will display an image of the Parliament Building, with the words “Sansad Sankul” written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery, and “Parliament Complex” written in English on the lower periphery. 

At the bottom of the Lion Capital, a rupee symbol will be incorporated along with the digit “75” to signify 75 years of independence.

The coin will be circular in shape, with a diameter of 44 millimeters, and will have 200 serrations along its edges. 

It will be composed of a four-part alloy, consisting of 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc. The total weight of the coin will be 35 grams.

The new Parliament Building is scheduled to be inaugurated on May 28, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the ceremony. 

However, several political parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK, Janata Dal (United), and others, have decided to boycott the event. 

They argue that the President of India should be responsible for inaugurating the new Parliament Building, rather than the Prime Minister.

However, as per the Indian constitution, the President is the head of the country while the Prime Minister is the head of government. Thus the PM is the eligible person to inaugurate the new Parliament building.

The former Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi & Indira Gandhi had followed the same when they had inaugurated some of the blocks of the Parliament.
