The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) has been officially renamed as the Prime Minister’s Museum and Library (PMML) Society starting from August 15.
This decision was made in a special meeting of the NMML Society held in mid-June. The new name, PMML, will cover the history and contributions of all the prime ministers of India. The change was finalized on August 15 after following a specific legal process.
The decision was met with controversy, with the Congress party expressing unhappiness about the renaming.
According to the process, the General Body of the Society had to meet twice with a one-month gap between meetings, and the change was then approved by the Registrar of Societies.
The renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) has led to a political dispute. The Congress party criticized the move, claiming that the government was against Jawaharlal Nehru and aiming to erase his legacy.
They accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of changing the name to the Prime Minister’s Museum and Library (PMML) to undermine Nehru’s importance. Congress leaders Manickam Tagore and Jairam Ramesh expressed their disagreement, calling the change petty.
In response, the BJP defended the renaming, saying it aims to give equal respect to all prime ministers, not just Nehru.
Ravi Shankar Prasad of the BJP highlighted that the museum should honor the contributions of all leaders, including Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and others.
He argued that the museum was built with public funds and should reflect the contributions of all prime ministers.

This is about the legacies of all the Prime Ministers who have served as India’s prime ministers instead of glorifying just one person.
The ruling BJP party is trying to acknowledge the collective role of all prime ministers with the new name ‘Prime Minister’s Museum and Library’ (PMML), while Congress is asking to show Nehru’s significance only.
