Government gives details about Covid situation in five India states to EC

Last updated on January 7th, 2022 at 04:56 am

Amid the rising number of Covid-19 cases in India, the government has given data related to the situation in five states which are due to vote in February-March – Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.

The concern is not just regarding the polling practice but also the long, mass gatherings and rallies that the politicians will be doing ahead of these states going into the election mode.

Hence it was necessary for the Election Commission to know about the situation before the democratic practice.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan also said that the Election Commission has been informed about the Omicron strain by the centre. The concerns related to the elections are increasing every passing day and even today, India registered over 90,000 new cases — a steep 65 per cent jump.

One of the biggest concerns regarding this is that huge, mega rallies may lead to a breach of Covid safety rules at mega political rallies in these poll-bound states. Many experts as well as smaller, regional political parties have called for delays in elections.

Uttar Pradesh is one of the toughest states to tackle the election considering the population of the state.

The major parties in the state are Congress, the BJP, and Samajwadi Party and they have been canceling rallies as the latest variant is known to be more transmissible than the first two variants. The legislative assemblies will end in Goa, Manipur and Punjab by March.
