Google Plans To Bring ‘Google News’ On Your WearOS Smartwatch

Google is working on a simplified version of the Google News feed which will allow smartwatch users to read news directly from their smartwatches.

The Google News app on our Android devices is quite polished, but there has yet to be a WearOS counterpart. 

One might be in the works, though, as part of Google’s increased dedication to Wear OS and the launch of the Pixel Watch. 

According to new information, Google may be working on a super-simplified Google News feed that you will be able to see directly from your watch.

Google has screenshots of what appears to be a watch-optimized version of the application, according to a Reddit user who was able to visit the Google News Play Store listing via their watch.

You can plainly see what appears to be a tile for reading the news as well as a greatly condensed version of the app’s news feed, even though that the app isn’t currently accessible for download on WearOS (finding “Google News” on the smartwatch edition of the Play Store yields nothing). 

On your smartphone, you can also choose to open news articles in their entirety. The Google Assistant’s app search feature was used as a workaround by the user to view the listing.

Although it’s difficult to tell how long those screenshots have been lying there unnoticed, the UI of the app appears to be extremely comparable to the Interface of other Wear OS 3 apps by Google from what screenshots show.

One of the screenshots offers a preview of a story posted over a year ago by The Verge. That might imply that something has been in the works for some time.

The screenshots indicate that Google is at least considering making the Google News app available on smartwatches, though we don’t know when or if that will happen.
