Google has introduced its latest Pixel 9 smartphone lineup, highlighting significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The release of these new devices comes earlier than usual, as Google typically launches its Pixel models in the fall. However, the upgrades in the Pixel 9 series mark a substantial leap forward compared to previous versions.
The new smartphones boast deeper integration of Google’s AI technology. One standout feature allows users to search for information and images within their screenshots, showcasing a more sophisticated AI approach. Additionally, the Gemini chatbot offers some of the smartphone’s functions as overlays within other apps, enhancing user experience.
At Google’s Bay View campus in Mountain View, California, Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, shared the company’s vision for the practical application of AI. He introduced the audience to the upcoming “Gemini era,” which will begin with the development of Google’s next-generation AI model.
The Pixel 9 series includes several models to cater to different preferences. The standard Pixel 9 features a 6.3-inch display, priced at $799. For those seeking a larger screen, the Pixel 9 Pro XL offers a 6.8-inch display. The Pixel 9 Pro, which comes with an upgraded camera system, is available at a higher price point. The lineup also includes the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, a foldable option.
Google announced that the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL would begin shipping in late August, while the Pro and Pro Fold models are slated for a September release. Preorders for all models open on August 13. During the event, Google also provided a live demo of Gemini’s latest conversational features and unveiled updates to the Pixel 9’s exterior design, the installation of an advanced camera system, and the integration of the new Tensor G4 chip.
In addition to the smartphones, Google also introduced the Pixel Watch 3 smartwatch and Pixel Buds Pro 2 wireless earbuds. The new Pixel Watch 3 includes a feature that monitors the user’s heart rate and automatically contacts emergency services if the heart rate stops, available in the UK and EU.
According to IDC, Google held less than 1% of the global smartphone market share in the second quarter of 2024, with Samsung and Apple leading at 18.9% and 15.8%, respectively. In the US, Google ranks fourth in smartphone operating systems, capturing 4.5% of the market.
While Google’s Pixel phones are not among the top-selling devices, industry analysts note that they demonstrate the advantages of the Android operating system, which powers more than 80% of smartphones worldwide. As a result, even users who have never owned a Pixel device may still benefit from the features that Google products introduce.
The event also highlighted Google’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI across its product portfolio, ensuring it remains a leader in technology innovation. The company recently enhanced AI capabilities within its core products, including its search engine. Additionally, Google announced a content-sharing partnership with Peloton, offering Fitbit Premium subscribers’ free access to Peloton’s training class library.
