Google, Apple & Microsoft Teams Up for Passwordless Sign-In Tech

Microsoft, Google, and Apple have teamed up to build a new authentication technology that will soon make your phone your password.

The three big tech companies have pledged to make your phone the key source of online verification in the future. “Multi-device FIDO credential” is the name given to the future technology.

There are hopes that phone-based authentication will become the new standard, and the FIDO Alliance has been given an uplift by Microsoft, Google, and Apple.

What is FIDO Alliance?

The FIDO alliance is an open-source organizational entity that has developed a standard for internet authentication.

FIDO means Fast Identity Online, which is an open-source industry group standard designed to make online verification easier and safer.

The alliance declared in a blog post,

“Password-only authentication is one of the biggest security problems on the web, and managing so many passwords is cumbersome for consumers, which often leads consumers to reuse the same ones across services.

The concept has received huge support from the three major tech companies.

How Will Passwordless Sign-in System Work?

Users will be able to login into their accounts “via the same action they perform several times every day to access their phone devices, like a simple fingerprint or face verification, or a 5-digit PIN,” in this new system.

The alliance claims that the new approach will prevent individuals from phishing and that logins will be more secure “than passwords and traditional multi-factor solutions like one-time passcodes delivered over SMS.”

To prevent undesired account takeovers, the new standard will employ Bluetooth and will require physical contact between the device & the user.

The alliance also stated that the new method would just use Bluetooth to check proximity, and that no Bluetooth attributes would be required for the sign-in procedure.

What Can Be A Future Threat?

This also enables firms like Microsoft, Google, and Apple to store and manage customers’ credentials, which can then be easily transferred from one device to another.

These companies will be like the owner of all your passwords. In future these companies can take advantage of this.
