Gayatri Gopichand, Treesa Jolly Win At All England Championships

Treesa Jolly & Gayatri Gopichand won & advanced to the All England Championships quarterfinals in Birmingham. The Indian team defeated the former world No. 1 pair.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty paired up after recuperating from an injury, but despite their best efforts, they were defeated by Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China, rated No. 10 in the world, 21-10, 17-21, and 19-21.

After defeating world No. 7-ranked Tan Pearly and Thinnah Muralitharan at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship in February, Treesa and Gayatri are in good shape.

The Indian team upset the seventh-seeded Thai duo of Jongkolphan Kiti Harakul and Rawinda Prajongai in the first round.

In the men’s singles match, Sen and Antonsen engaged in some fantastic rallies, with the latter grabbing an early 8-4 lead and then earning a three-point advantage at the break.

Sen, on the other hand, swiftly ramped up the tempo and, after winning a game that lasted 52 strokes, leveled the match at 11-11.

When Antonsen launched a winner on his opposition’s forehand to win yet another dramatic match, the Indian couldn’t keep up the pace and fell behind 19-13.

Sen and Antonsen, two former top-10 players, competed for individual glory, but their errors prevented them from winning.

After exchanging sides, Sen played well and eventually established a 9-4 advantage, which he later increased to 11-5 by the halfway point of the game. Then, at 10-11, Antonsen mounted a comeback to edge out the Indian by one point.

Sen then seemed disoriented as Antonsen started to establish the conditions to turn the match around during 14-13 after the Indian forced a shot into the goal. Sen made a few errors, allowing the Dane to gain five match points and grab the lead right away.

Sen’s second-round exit will cause him to lose a lot of ranking points, which will cause him to fall further in the BWF rankings.

Last Tuesday, the former world No. 6 fell to position 19 after losing in the opening round of the German Open.
