Gandhi Jayanti 2024: India Celebrates Mahatma Gandhi’s 155th Birth Anniversary

India celebrated the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October 2024 by observing it as Cleanliness Day all over the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the outset of the celebration observed the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2024’ program at Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi, commemorating the 10 years of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

National Leaders Pay Tributes

President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdep Dehankhar visited Gandhi’s memorial in the form of Rajghat in the national capital. Prime Minister Modi, Union Minister Manohar Lal, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid floral homage to the site.

Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign Success

While addressing the nation, PM Modi pointed out that in the Swachh Pakwada cleanliness event, the people of India organized over 2700000 programs across the country within 15 days of ‘Sewa Pakhwada’ and more than 28 crore people participated. The Prime Minister said, “Continuous efforts, can only lead to a clean India.”

Cultural Significance

The much-celebrated event of Gandhi Jayanti on the International Day of Non-Violence is also a day when the people of India pay homage to Bapu and his message of truth and non-violence. His most popular bhajan is Vaishnav Jan To, composed by the 15th-century Gujarati poet and saint Narsinh Mehta, and was seen on social networks.

X (formerly Twitter) users posted genuine messages to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s work. One user referred to him as the greatest human ever born on this earth while others recommended that on this day people should take time to ponder the power of truth and nonviolence.

Historical Context

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October the 2nd 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat to become the leader of the Indian freedom struggle against the colonial master – Britain using Gandhian nonviolent protest. His philosophy is still a focus of millions of people around the globe, solving modern problems with the help of tolerant and socially justified values.
