Gadkari is pushing for green hydrogen amongst surging petrol and diesel prices. According to a formal statement he has made, India is indirectly financing terrorism by making countries richer when we import petrol and diesel.
Speaking at an event, the media quoted the Road, transport and highways minister saying that “Green hydrogen is better than petrol and diesel. The transport sector is witnessing a big change. We want to make a country which will not be dependent upon the import of petrol and diesel but will export fuel,” the road transport and highways minister said, adding that this was a nationalistic view.” By importing petrol and diesel, Gadkari, who is known for his frank views, said, “We are making countries richer which also finance terrorism.”
The world is under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint as surging environmental temperatures are risking the whole Earth’s survival and various ecosystems. Stressing on our dependency on imports, he said, the same should be thought about metals like aluminum and copper, which strangely, India has in abundance and does not need to import.
He further said the reduction of import of petrol and diesel can solve a lot of problems being faced by the country.
Power shortage has become a reality for India as much as it is for countries like Lebanon that have become dependent on imported oil. Gatkari has preempted a situation of power shortage in India in the coming months, between December 2021 and May 2022. This isn’t good news for the world’s second largest economy that has been so far dependent on coal to meet its electricity needs. With the Paris Agreement seeking concrete results for participating nations, and zero emission till 2050, India is under pressure to quickly shift to greener sources of energy.
