G20: How India Has Became A Significant Voice Of Global South

India, during its presidency of the G20, has prioritized being the voice of the Global South, which includes developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of consulting with both G20 partners and fellow Global South nations to ensure their concerns are heard.

Since assuming the G20 presidency in December 2022, India has actively raised issues concerning the Global South at international forums and United Nations meetings and conferences.

The Global South often faces challenges and issues that are different from those of economically developed countries in the Global North.

By focusing on the concerns of the Global South, India aims to address the specific needs and perspectives of developing nations and give them a platform to voice their opinions and shape the G20 agenda.

India has been actively working to advance the cause of the Global South, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, India sent Made-in-India vaccines to about 100 countries and exported medicines to about 150 nations, demonstrating its commitment to supporting other countries in need.

In addition, India hosted the Voice of Global South Summit virtually in January, with representatives from 125 countries, and ensured that the region remained center stage at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the Inaugural Leaders’ session at the Voice of Global South Summit, followed by eight Ministerial-level thematic segments dedicated to addressing the most pressing concerns of the developing world.

The Summit concluded with a Concluding Leaders’ Session hosted by Prime Minister Modi. The participating leaders appreciated and congratulated the Indian Prime Minister for hosting the Summit.

They expressed hope that it would serve as a catalyst for building a prosperous and inclusive future for the world that takes into account the needs of the Global South.

India’s efforts to support the Global South during the pandemic and its initiatives to bring attention to the region’s concerns at international forums demonstrate its commitment to raising issues and advocating for the interests of developing countries.

India is advocating for the Global South by proposing the inclusion of the African Union as a full member of the G20.

During the 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the Global South is not just a diplomatic term, but represents the shared history of these countries in their fight against colonialism and apartheid, which is now shaping their modern relations.

PM Modi expressed gratitude to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for providing the opportunity to discuss the priorities and concerns of the countries in the Global South.

He also highlighted the importance of giving them significance in the current generation and announced the expansion of BRICS, welcoming new partner countries.

India recently held a two-day event on International Taxation in collaboration with the South Centre, a Geneva-based think-tank of developing countries.

The event, titled ‘Two Pillar Solution – Understanding the Implications for the Global South’, aimed to voice the views of the Global South on important international issues.

The discussions during the event focused on the ramifications of the Two-Pillar Solution for developing economies. The event also included a workshop on Tax Treaty Negotiations.

This initiative is part of India’s vision for its G20 Presidency to strengthen capacity building for Indian tax officials in the area of International Taxation, with a global south perspective.
