The Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) could begin in 2023. BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) secretary Jay Shah has said that the board aims to begin the IPL as soon as possible.
A three-team Women’s T20 Challenge is staged alongside the men’s IPL. However, cricket fans believe women deserve their own tournament with more teams and players.
In an email to Reuters, Shah said, “BCCI is taking all necessary steps to start a full-fledged women’s league similar to the IPL soon.” Earlier BCCI President Sourav Ganguly also opened up about the possibility of starting a women’s IPL next year.
Reportedly, Ganguly said that 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women’s IPL. He added that the women’s IPL will be as big and grand as the men’s IPL. Ganguly also said that the domestic season of women’s cricket will resume when the number of Covid-19 cases goes down in the country.
This news comes after various cricketers, both male and female, told the BCCI to start the women’s IPL tournament in India. The Women’s T20 Challenge was not held in 2021 in the country. However, the BCCI hosted the men’s IPL in two halves amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Subsequently, Indian women cricketers including Jemimah Rodrigues and Smriti Mandhana, have made calls for the introduction of the women’s IPL. Earlier, former England captain Michael Vaughan also urged the BCCI chief to start a women’s Indian Premier League in the country.
Cricket Australia organises a Women’s Big Bash League (BBL). In 2021, eight Indian women’s players took part in the BBL in Australia.
The Women’s T20 Challenge will continue in 2022, but BCCI secretary Jay Shah said things would change soon. This year’s men’s IPL will begin in March. Reportedly, Shah was confident of staging the 10-team league in India.
