Former Indian athlete Anju Bobby George wins World Athletics’ Women of Year Award

kerala – World Athletics has awarded former Indian athlete Anju Bobby George with the title of Women of the Year on Thursday.

Upon receiving the award, the athlete thanked the federation and said that she was ‘humbled’ and ‘honoured’ to win the Woman of the Year Award by World Athletics for the work she has been doing in the country especially for the emerging athletes.

George has been continuously working in favour of young athletes while making efforts to groom them and also encourage young girls in India to be equally involved in sports. She has for years been motivating them to fight and raise their voices for gender equality.

She has had an exemplary career in the history of Indian athletes. She was the first athlete from the country to win a medal at the 2003 World Championships in long jump. Not only has she inspired many with her dedication and strength as a sports person but she has also proved to be a mentor for thousands of kids looking to make a future in athletics in India.

The official page of world athletics congratulated the former athletes and present coach for winning the prestigious title. They said, “Congratulations to Anju Bobby George on being crowned this year’s Woman of the Year at the World Athletics Awards.”

They added that the efforts she has put into advancing athletics in India is commendable. The federation also stated that the way Anju is still very much involved in the sport is visible especially after she opened a training academy for young girls in 2016, which has already helped shape lives of many athletes including being a part of the World U20 medalist.
