  1. Age is just a number. Believe in your ability

Despite numerous legislation to combat age discrimination, ageism is still a problem, James Reed from recruitment firm Reed says.

He suggests shifting the spotlight onto your ability instead of your age. For instance, he suggests taking out older experiences that date back over 10 years, while underscoring that you should never lie about your age.

  • Don’t hesitate to reveal any relevant health concerns

Did you leave your last job because of health concerns? Well, several experts say you don’t need to disclose a history of illnesses in the interview if they won’t affect your ability to perform your duty.

But you should always be truthful about conditions that might have an impact.

  • Keep updating your skills

James Reed highlights older workers can frequently encounter prejudicial questions concerning digital literacy. Therefore in order to stand out from the crowd during interviews, they must polish their skills in areas valued by employers.

The over-50s are also recommended to reveal their interest in learning new skills and facing new challenges in their applications.

  • If you need flexibility, don’t hesitate to ask for it

Some older people have caring responsibilities, no longer possess the energy to work full-time, or simply prefer part-time roles. Irrespective of your preferences, you should never be afraid to ask for flexible work.

In fact, a growing number of businesses are now realising that one of the best ways to retain loyal older workers is by providing flexible working.

  • Don’t undervalue yourself

Older workers must avoid falling into the trap of underselling themselves.

Petra Tagg from Manpower says often the advantage for the over-50s is the huge width of experience they bring along. She recommends reminding yourself of what makes you special, in circumstances where younger candidates may seem to have an advantage.
