Earlier, a five-member TMC delegation was set to visit Nagaland today after civilian killings. The TMC delegation consisted of members of Parliament Sushmita Dev, Santanu Sen, Prasun Banerjee, Aparupa Poddar, and party spokesperson Biswajit Deb. TMC was set to meet with the families of those who died in the firing incident in the Mon district of Nagaland.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on civilian killings said that he has spoken to the Union home minister about the matter. He also asked the Central government to repeal AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) from Nagaland. He further said that they have given financial assistance to affected families.
Security forces opened fire on civilians killing 14 and injuring 11 more in the Mon district of Nagaland in three consecutive incidents of firing. One soldier reportedly also died due to firing. Reportedly, police said on Sunday that the first incident of firing was possibly a case of mistaken identity.
Subsequently, the chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee on Sunday extended condolences to the families of those who died in the firing incident. She further called for a detailed investigation of the matter.
The investigation is about the botched-up counter-insurgency operation by the Indian army. The Indian army opened fire on civilians which led to the death of 14 civilians and one soldier. Mamata Banerjee wrote on Twitter, “Worrisome news from Nagaland. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured. We must ensure a thorough probe into the incident and ensure that all victims get justice!”
