First phase of UP Assembly elections record 60% turnout

Uttar pradesh -First phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections was held on Thursday across the state’s 11 districts recording more than 60 per cent voter turnout. Officials said that the Kairana constituency of Shamli district topped the chart recording highest turnout of 75 per cent among the contesting seats. Average voting was lower than 63.47 per cent in same constituencies during previous elections.

Polling was closed at 6 pm in the evening with one-hour extension being given due to Covid-19 related protocols. Officials have reported that the first phase in Uttar Pradesh witnessed voting by 2.28 crore voters that included 1.24 crore men and 1.04 crore women. Additional Chief Election Officer B D Ram Tiwari said, “There were reports of a technical error in EVMs at some places.” These EVMs were later replaced as soon as the reports came in, he added.

Among the prominent candidates from contesting constituencies during this phase were Pankaj Singh, sitting MLA from Noida and son of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Baby Rani Maurya, former Uttarakhand governor who is contesting from Agra Rural.

Shamli district, which includes the constituencies of Shamli, Kairana, and Thana Bhawan, recorded a turnout of 69.42 per cent, which is the highest among all the 10 districts where voting was held. Kairana reported a record 75.12 per cent voting, Shamli recorded 67.50 per cent turnout and Thana Bhawan recorded a turnout of 65.63 per cent. Ghaziabad had the lowest poll with 54.77 per cent, which is a decrease of about 3 per cent from the 2017 Assembly elections. Turnout in Gautam Buddha Nagar was at 56.73 per cent – nearly the same as the previous elections. Latest reports note Agra recorded 60.33 per cent polling, Aligarh 60.49 per cent, Baghpat 61.35 per cent, Bulandshahr 60.52 per cent, Hapur 60.50 per cent, Mathura 63.28 per cent, Meerut 60.91 per cent and Muzaffarnagar 65.34 per cent
