Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is the new President of FTII Society

Pune based FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) has a new President, the celebrated filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who is known for his science fiction film Mr. India (1987). He will also be the Chairman of governing council of the institute. The appointment was confirmed via tweet from Prakash Javadekar, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday, “Happy to inform that renowned international film personality #ShekharKapur has been appointed as the President of FTII Society & Chairman of Governing Council of FTII. @narendramodi.@shekharkapur. Mr Kapur, who has a vast experience, will add more value to the Institute. I am sure everybody will welcome his appointment”

The order of Mr. Kapur’s appointment has been issued by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (Films Wing), and signed by Under Secretary (Films-II) Surajit Indu. The tenure of Shekhar Kapur’s presidentship of the society will end on March 3, 2023.

The filmmaker has made his mark in Hollywood as well. His directorial debut was with the Bollywood cult film Masoom (1983) that starred Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, and Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Mantondkar as child artists.

Industry’s big names like Prasoon Joshi and Ranvir Shorey were instant in congratulating Kapur on the respectable appointment. Prasoon tweeted, “Heartfelt best wishes to you @shekharkapur. Your unmatched experience, broad vision and contemporary pathbreaking ideas will benefit many in your new role. #ShekharKapur @FTIIOfficial.” Ranvir Shorey tweeted, “Congratulations to @shekharkapur! A true master filmmaker at the helm of India’s premier film institute, FTII, will surely help India achieve excellence in cinema and find its place on the global stage at a time when filmmaking is exploding the world over.”

Kapur’s most remarkable works include historical biopics on Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth (1998) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), for which he was internationally acclaimed. Elizabeth (1998) won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film and both the movies won an Academy Award.
