Protesting farmers have put up tents outside the residence of the Chief Minister in Karnal, as well as outside Sirsa MP Sunita Duggal’s residence in Sirsa, Kurukshetra MLA Subhash Sudha’s residence along with other MLAs and MPs across the state. CM Khattar’s residence has been under security by paramilitary forces. Roads leading to the house too have been locked down by Haryana Police. A senior police officer said, “Peaceful protest is the right of people but if they indulge in any sort of violence or block the highways or main roads, legal action shall be taken. We are closely monitoring the entire situation.”
Bharatiya Kisan Union’s (BKU) Gurnam Singh Chaduni said, “We had already warned the state government not to delay the paddy procurement. The government must immediately begin the process to avoid any further losses to the farmers. In case the government fails to begin procurement immediately, they should brace for a massive agitation.”
BKU’s Haryana leader Jagdeep Singh Aulakh said earlier in the day, “Around 5,000-6,000 farmers will reach Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s residence in Karnal since he too represents the Karnal assembly constituency. Similar protests will be held across all constituencies of Haryana. We will park our tractor-trolleys filled with paddy crops outside the residences of MLAs and MPs.”
On Thursday, the Government of India announced delaying of paddy procurement in Haryana and Punjab due to delayed monsoon till October 11, triggering farmers protests.
