Fact Check: Dev Anand’s Bungalow Sold For ₹400 Crore To Build 22-Storey Tower

Have you heard that Dev Anand’s wife & his kids have sold his bungalow for ₹400 Crore? His bungalow will be converted into a 22-storey building. Really?

A news source had reported a fake news on 19th September about Dev Anand’s bungalow in Juhu (Mumbai). It reported that the bungalow had been sold for a substantial amount, around Rs 350-400 crore, and was going to be replaced by a 22-story tower.

This created quite a buzz across the entertainment industry. It also hurt Dev Anand’s iconic status in the Indian film industry and our sentimental value attached to him including his heritage (home).

All these rumors turned out to be false. Ketan Anand, who is Dev Anand’s nephew and a filmmaker himself, denied the real estate development plans.

Ketan clarified that there was no such deal being discussed or negotiated, and he had verified this with Dev Anand’s daughter, Devina, and the family.

Dev Anand was a legendary actor in Indian cinema during the late ’50s, ’60s, and early ’70s. He starred in several popular and great films like “Guide,” “Jewel Thief,” and “Johny Mera Naam.” He left an indelible mark on the industry and on the heart of fans like us. He passed away in 2011.

Rumors and such fake claims are quite common in the entertainment industry. Celebrities’ personal lives, properties, and career decisions often become subjects of public interest and gossip.

Such rumors can spread rapidly due to the news media. Now we also have  social media networks, which spread fake news among the people. Thus it’s not unusual for false information to circulate.

But the sad thing is that the government or our laws bodies (courts etc.) don’t take legal actions against these news sources. In some cases, rumors are harmless and are part of the celebrity culture. But we can’t ignore its negative impacts.

And, if a rumor is damaging to a person’s reputation or leads to significant harm, there should be strict legal actions against.

Usually, the government or law typically intervenes in cases of defamation or spreading false information only when there is a clear violation of the law.

If we (people), the courts and the government ignore these news sources, they would be encouraged to spread more and bigger fake news to gain self popularity and people’s attention!
