Engineer’s Day 2022: A Tribute To The Dr. M. Visvesvaraya, First Civil Engineer

Dr. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is known as the first Civil Engineer of India. His birth date is celebrated as Engineers’ Day in India, Sri Lanka & other countries.

Many of them have a clear career goal of becoming civil engineers, but do you know who is referred to as India’s first civil engineer? It’s Dr. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, of course.

Engineers Day is observed on September 15 (1860), the birthday of Dr. M. Visvesvaraya, who received the Bharat Ratna in 1955, as a result of the exceptional engineering work completed (dams, reservoirs, and hydroelectric projects).

Engineers Day was declared by the Indian government in 1968, and since then it has always been observed on this day.

On Engineer’s Day, the nation honors the efforts of professionals in all engineering fields and their commitment to the development of the nation. 

In technical education schools around the nation, a variety of events, discussions, writing activities, etc. are organized.

Precursor Of Economic Planning In India

The Institution of Engineers India referred to Dr. M. Vishweshwaraiya as the “precursor of economic planning in India” in addition to his contributions to engineering (IEI). 

His books “Planned Economy of India” and “Reconstructing India” were released in 1920 & 1934, respectively. While serving as Diwan of Mysore, he was knighted in 1915 and received the Bharat Ratna award in 1955.
