Disney+ Hotstar Plans To Limit Account Sharing In India

Walt Disney’s streaming service, Disney+ Hotstar, is planning to limit password sharing among its premium users in India. This decision comes after Netflix recently ended password sharing in India and other countries.

Currently, Disney+ Hotstar allows premium account holders to log in from up to ten devices, even though the website states a limit of four devices. However, the company now intends to enforce the four-device login policy later this year.

The new restriction means that premium subscribers will only be able to connect from a maximum of four devices. This move is aimed at reducing password sharing and encouraging users to have their own subscriptions. While some users might find this restriction inconvenient, Disney believes that it will lead to more committed subscribers in the long run.

India has become a critical market for streaming services, with platforms like Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and JioCinema gaining immense popularity. The streaming sector in India is expected to grow into a $7 billion market by 2027.

Disney+ Hotstar has internally tested the enforcement of this policy and is now preparing to implement it. The company expects that by limiting password sharing, more people will be incentivized to purchase their own subscriptions.

Currently, Disney’s Hotstar holds a dominant position in the Indian streaming market, with a 38% share of viewership between January 2022 and March 2023. Netflix and Prime Video each have a 5% share during the same period.

It’s worth noting that Disney has not officially announced this decision yet, so we’ll have to wait and see how they shape their password sharing crackdown. As streaming services compete for viewers and revenue growth, such measures are becoming more common in the industry.
