Did Bihar Govt Tweak Jail Rules To Release Anand Mohan?

Anand Mohan, a gangster-turned-politician has been released early from his jail sentence. This happened when the Bihar Govt made sudden changes in jail manuals.

The Bihar government has faced criticism for its decision to release Anand Mohan, a gangster-turned-politician who was convicted of the murder of Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah in 1994.

The Bihar People’s Party founder, a former MP, was among 27 life-term prisoners whose release was notified on April 26, after the state government amended its prison manual to allow for the early release of those convicted of murdering public servants on duty, provided they had served an actual sentence of 14 years or 20 years with remission.

Mohan was recently released on parole to attend a wedding in his family. The Central Indian Administrative Service Association, representing civil servants, described the amendment to the prison manual as “tantamount to denial of justice” and said it led to impunity, undermined public order and eroded the morale of public servants.

The Bihar government has faced criticism from opposition parties over the decision, but a member of the ruling Janata Dal (United) said the amendment was not intended to benefit any individual.

On April 27, Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Tarkishore Prasad defended the decision, saying Mohan had served his sentence and was being released legally.

The Bihar jail manual made many tweaks lately and it seems that all these tweaks were made in order to release gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan.

The jail manual Clause 481 was the primary reason why he was put in jail in the first place. But the Bihar government made sudden changes in the clause which helped Anand Mohan get out early.

As per a report, 72% of ministers in Bihar’s current cabinet have criminal cases against them.

Anand Mohan had killed an IAS officer. The officer’s wife has asked, “Will people have faith in a government that frees criminals?’ She has asked PM, Modi, to intervene in this case.
