The capital city Delhi faced a challenging situation due to extremely dense fog, impacting both flights and trains significantly. On Wednesday, over 110 flights were affected at Delhi’s airport. This happened because the visibility was extremely low, dropping to just 50 metres.
It’s like not being able to see beyond half the length of a cricket pitch. This fog didn’t just cover Delhi but spread across north India, causing a lot of travel disruptions.
The weather office, which keeps an eye on these conditions, issued a red alert. This means the situation is very serious. They said there’s “very dense fog” in Delhi. Additionally, 25 trains heading to Delhi were delayed by more than 6 hours.
Sadly, this fog also led to accidents. In Uttar Pradesh, several collisions were reported. One such incident on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway involved multiple vehicles and resulted in one person losing their life and 12 others getting injured. In another case, a truck crashed into a house near Bareilly, which was quite shocking.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), who study the weather, warned of “dense to very dense fog conditions” in several states including Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
In Delhi, two places – Palam and Safdarjung – showed visibility levels of 125 and 50 meters, respectively. But some people in Delhi said it felt even worse in some areas. Other cities like Patiala, Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Amritsar also experienced very low visibility.
Another concern is air quality. In Delhi, it declined sharply. The Air Quality Index, which measures air pollution, showed a level of 381, which is considered “very poor.” This means the air is not healthy to breathe.
Finally, Delhi’s temperature was around 7 degrees Celsius in the morning, expected to go up to 24 degrees during the day. But the forecast suggests that the air quality might worsen in the coming week.
