Delhi Western Peripheral Expressway to be blocked by farm unions on March 10

Farm unions protesting against the agriculture laws are blocking Western Peripheral Expressway surrounding capital city of Delhi starting from Saturday, March 10, 8 am to Sunday, 8 am. The farm unions are protesting under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha.

The expressway, which is also known as the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal or KMP Expressway, will be blocked for 24 hours. Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) said in a statement that the blockade is intended to be a “warning to the government.”

The unions are being joined by youth from Punjab, led by gangster turned activist Lakha Sidhana. Sidhana is wanted by Delhi Police in relation to violence in Delhi on Republic Day.

During their meeting on Thursday, the SKM leaders said that they would be giving the Central Government time till May 9. If the centre fails to accede to their demands of completely repealing the laws, they would go forward with their march to Parliament. A farmer union leader present at the meeting said, “Anyway, nothing will happen till [election results are declared on] May 2. Plus, many farmers will be busy with wheat harvesting till May 10. So we will take action after that,”

The expressway blockade was initially planned to start from 11 am on Saturday but was later advanced by three hours to start from 8 am. The blockade is expected to affect at least 25,000 vehicles. Dharnas by farmers are planned to be held at entry points of the expressway and at toll plazas en route. The protesting farmer unions have advised people to avoid the expressway but assured that those stranded would be provided with food and water.

Sidhana, also known as Lakhbir Singh, had fled after Delhi Police named him in violence in National Capital violence on January 26th as an accused party. INR 1 Lakh reward has been put on his head. Though absconding, Sidhana has been seen addressing events in Bathinda, his native.
