Delhi Police calls Republic Day violence “a well-planned conspiracy to embarrass country” in charge sheet

January 26, India’s Republic Day was a black mark on world’s biggest democracy. Farmers’ tractor rally that was supposed to be peaceful quickly turned violent as rioters charged towards Red Fort and tried to take control over it. The tractor rally was a part of the farmer’s protests by farmer unions demanding government o withdraw agriculture laws.

The Delhi Police in its charge sheet said “a deep-rooted well-orchestrated conspiracy” was formulated and executed on the “very auspicious occasion” hoist the Nishan Sahib and Kisan Flag at Red Fort “in order to cause embarrassment and humiliation at the national and international level to the people of this country”. Chargesheet further mentions that protesters had a plan that was “pre-conceived and well-coordinated” to breach the agreement between farmer union leaders and government about following three routes for a ‘peaceful’ tractor rally in Delhi on Republic Day. It added that protesters wanted “to conquer/get hold of (Red Fort)” and then “make it a new protest site for farmers”. The charge sheet has been filed by Delhi Police against 16 people, including Punjabi actor-activist Deep Sidhu who was doing a Facebook live session, allegedly instigating protesters.

“Present episode of violence is the outcome of a deep rooted well-orchestrated conspiracy as the arrested persons along with other known and unknown persons, leaders & instigators (who have not yet been arrested), had deliberately, intentionally and knowingly chosen the very auspicious occasion of the country viz Republic Day 2021, to hoist Nishan Sahib & Kisan Flag, in order to cause embarrassment and humiliation at the national & international level to the people of this country,” the chargesheet reads.
