| On Saturday, Delhi Assembly panel issued a notice to Facebook India Vice President and Managing Director Ajit Mohan asking him to appear before the panel on September 15 in connection with Delhi riots and the company’s ignorant attitude towards hate messages posted on its forums. The complaints filed against the social media platform alleged its deliberate and intentional inaction to curtail hateful content disseminated by Bhartiya Janta Party members across the country. “Summon was issued on the basis of scathing depositions of the key witnesses as well as incriminating material submitted by them on record,” an official statement stated on Saturday. The summon was issued after a detailed report published by the Wall Street Journal accused one of Facebook India’s senior policy executives to have intentionally intervened to halt internal communication with regard to putting permanent ban on Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker from Telangana after he allegedly shared communal hate-incitingcontent. “We hereby summon you (Ajit Mohan) to appear before the committee on September 15, 2020 at 12 Noon at MLA Lounge- 1, Delhi Vidhan Sabha, for the purpose of recording your deposition on oath and participating in the proceedings carried out by the committee,” Delhi Assembly’s deputy secretary said in the notice sent on September 10. The notice added, “The committee, under the Chairmanship of Hon’be MLA Sh. Raghav Chadha, calls you, the addressee, as a witness for testifying on oath and for rendering your assistance by providing the relevant information and explanations in order to smoothly expedite the determination of the veracity of allegations levelled against Facebook in the complaints and depositions made before the committee.” In August, Facebook in order to clarify its stand on hateful content said that the company had a strict policy against it and the platform vehemently prohibits posting of hate speech and messages which could incite violence. The social media company added that its content related policies were unanimously enforced globally without holding any political affiliation. “We prohibit hate speech and content that incites violence and we enforce these policies globally without regard to anyone’s political position or party affiliation […] While we know there is more to do, we’re making progress on enforcement and conduct regular audits of our process to ensure fairness and accuracy,” a Facebook spokesperson had said.
